On Thursday, September 8th, 2022 the Chesapeake Angels completed the sweep of the Patuxent Blue Wave in a best-of-three series by a score of 4-0. In the championship series, the Angels offense was led by Kyle Neverman (4-8), (2) 2B, (3) R, Jaime Rodriguez 2B, (4) RBI and Joe Landi 2B, (3) R. Pat Kohl, Brian Black, and Matt Althoff toed the mound for the Angels allowing only two earned runs in 18 innings while stranding 21 runners.
The Angels’ 2022 campaign was not an easy ride as the 2021 innings leader went down with an arm injury in the first game. The squad went 3-4 and amassed 19 errors in the first seven games. The Angels turned the season around by winning their next nine games and had two victories via walk-off home runs. They finished the regular season at 14-6 which was good enough for second place and a first-round bye.
The first playoff game against the Chesapeake Patriots was lost in the ninth inning by a score of 5-4. The Angels’ offense rallied in the next three games scoring 28 runs to get back to the championship. The wins included a 13-0 revenge victory over the Patriots. The Angels won the first game of the championship by a score of 5-3 and went on to wrap up the series two days later, winning 4-0.
Brian Black (2.86 ERA) and Matt Althoff (2.30 ERA) did a great job filling the void on the mound. They threw over 100 innings, had a 5-1 record each, and earned three combined saves. Kyle Neverman led the Angels’ offense with a 0.425 AVG, 0.533 OBP, (8) 2B, and (4) HR. The 2022 Championship makes three in four years in the Chesapeake MSBL and the second in three years in the American Division.
