‘2026 Rhode Island Seadogs 28+ Championship Season: A Year for the Ages’

Submitted by Shawn Rogers, manager

The 2026 RI Seadogs delivered one of the most dominant seasons in league history, finishing 24-1 overall, with an undefeated regular season and a staggering +197 run differential. The championship campaign culminated in the franchise’s historic 12th consecutive championship, completing what players and fans proudly call the “Dirty Dozen.”

While the numbers alone tell the story of dominance, this championship season was about much more than wins and losses. The Seadogs played with purpose throughout the year, honoring a beloved former teammate who passed away during the season while also rallying around a current team member courageously battling cancer. Every win, every comeback, and ultimately every championship celebration carried added meaning.

A Championship Built on Pitching and Power…Throughout the regular season, the Seadogs overwhelmed opponents on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the lineup featured relentless production from Jake Ferreira, Jay Martin, Josh “Yoshi” Ferreira, Mike “Meech” Rachun, Rob Reyes, and Jay Lee, consistently putting pressure on opposing pitchers and generating runs in bunches.

Rhode Island Men's Senior Baseball League logoOn the mound, the Seadogs featured one of the league’s most dominant pitching staffs. Chris Zervas, Jay Lee, Myles Levy, Zach Kirby, and Andrew Smiley anchored a rotation that allowed just 50 runs across 20 regular-season games, setting the tone for a championship run defined by elite pitching. When the stakes became highest, the Seadogs’ aces elevated their performances even further.

Semifinals: Seadogs Defeat the Bulls…Game 1: Comeback Victory…The semifinals opened with an instant classic.  After falling behind by three runs, the Seadogs trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Refusing to quit, the offense mounted a dramatic rally.

With runners on base, Jake Ferreira delivered a clutch two-run double to even the score at 3-3 and breathe life into the Seadogs’ championship hopes. One inning later, Josh “Yoshi” Ferreira provided the defining moment of the game, launching a towering solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Seadogs a 4-3 lead and ultimately the victory.

While the offense delivered late-game heroics, Zach Kirby was sensational on the mound. Kirby worked eight dominant innings, striking out an astonishing 18 batters and keeping the Seadogs within striking distance until the offense erupted.

Game 2: Bulls Force Decisive Third Game…The Bulls battled back in Game Two, earning a hard-fought 9-6 victory to even the series. The game swung back and forth before the Bulls secured the win behind a three-hit performance from Jim Belcastro.

The loss marked the Seadogs’ only defeat of the season and set up a winner-take-all Game Three.

…Any thoughts of momentum carrying over disappeared almost immediately. The Seadogs erupted for eight runs in the first inning, taking complete control of the game from the opening frame. With a massive early lead, Zach Kirby once again took over on the mound, delivering another masterpiece. Kirby scattered just four hits over seven shutout innings, completely silencing the Bulls offense and leading the Seadogs to a commanding 10-0 victory and a return trip to the championship series.

The Seadogs’ offense throughout the semifinals was led by Jake Ferreira, Jay Martin, and Josh “Yoshi” Ferreira, whose timely hitting consistently provided the spark the team needed.

Finals: Seadogs Complete the Dirty Dozen…Game 1: Levy Leads the Way

The championship series opened with another dominant pitching performance.  Myles Levy was outstanding, throwing eight innings while allowing just one unearned run. Pitching efficiently and attacking hitters all night, Levy kept the opposition off balance and gave the Seadogs every chance to take control of the series.

Offensively, the game remained close until the decisive seventh inning.  Joe Yankee and Harrison Barlow got on board before Jay Martin delivered the biggest hit of the night, crushing a two-run double in a five-run inning that broke the game open. Behind Levy’s stellar outing and a late offensive surge, the Seadogs took a 7-2 win and a 1-0 series lead.

Game 2: Kirby Finishes the Job…With a championship within reach, the Seadogs turned once again to Zach Kirby, and he delivered one final masterpiece.  Kirby dominated from the first pitch to the last, throwing a 9-inning complete game, allowing only three hits and one run while striking out ten batters.

It was the culmination of one of the greatest postseason pitching performances in team history.

The offense provided plenty of support.

  • Jake Ferreira: 2 hits, 3 runs scored, 2 RBIs
  • Jay Martin: 2 hits, 1 run scored
  • Josh “Yoshi” Ferreira: 3 hits, 3 RBIs

The Seadogs cruised to a 10-1 victory, securing the championship and cementing their place in league history.

A Season to Remember…The 2026 RI Seadogs will be remembered as one of the greatest teams ever assembled. An undefeated regular season, a 24-1 overall record, a +197 run differential, and a twelfth consecutive championship would be enough to define a historic year. But beyond the statistics, this team will be remembered for its resilience, brotherhood, and heart.

Playing in memory of a fallen teammate and alongside a teammate courageously battling cancer, the Seadogs found purpose larger than baseball. Twelve consecutive championships. A 24-1 record. A Dirty Dozen. The 2026 RI Seadogs didn’t just win another championship. They built a legacy.  Shawn Rogers
