New Canaan Cannons 2, Monroe Top Hats 1 (Game two in best-of-three championship series sweep)

The Cannons, who have been led by manager, Henry Boyton for the past 35 (!) seasons, beat their rivals, the Monroe Top Hats, two games to none in the best of three championship series at Mead Memorial Park, in New Canaan, Connecticut on October 5th.
The series was a rematch of last year’s championship, which the Top Hats won in three games, with a 1-0 extra inning win in game three, and was the second time the Top Hats clipped the Cannons 1-0 in a winner-take-all championship game in the past five seasons. (The Cannons swept the Top Hats in the semifinals in 2022.)
But this time, it was the Cannons’ turn! Led by their pitching, the Cannons took Game one, 5-1, with Ryan Quinn going seven strong, benefiting from his battery mate, Jon Barbarula, doubling twice to knock in two runs, and the defense making all the plays.
Game two was a thriller from start to finish, with the two teams knotted at one run apiece from the second inning until the bottom of the ninth, when Cannons two-way standout, Roy Natoli, delivered the walk-off hit for a 2-1 win. Mike Korevec and Eric Stenger led the way on the mound, while Natoli and Marlon Bautista delivered the big hits.
The championship win caps a five-year stretch where the Cannons appeared in five consecutive championship series, but were tough luck runner ups four times. En route to this year’s championship win, the Cannons eliminated their other rival, the #1 seed Danbury Scrappers, in the semifinal series, handily beating the Scrappers 6-0 in the decisive game three.
During the Cannons’ five-year run, the team went 62-26 in the regular season and 25-11 in the postseason — no team in the league played more games during that period, and no team won more games. The Cannons beat a different team in each of the five semifinal series they played during that stretch, before finally reaching the top of the mountain with the 2025 championship win.
The Cannons pride themselves on mental toughness, deep rosters, elite pitching, and lockdown defense, and the 2025 championship campaign epitomized all those qualities.
