2024 South Bend Opossums Shutout Cubs for First Michiana Adult Baseball League Title
Michiana Adult Baseball League
South Bend Opossum 10, Cubs 0
In the end, it came down to who had pitching left. The Opossums, managed by Matt Gray, have always had a fantastic team, but this year everything fell into place and they won their first championship in the Michiana Adult Baseball League!
The Championship Game was 0-0 going into the top of the fifth when the Opossum pounded out nine runs on seven hits, as the bats finally came alive. Kage Haeck started the scoring off with a single to score Tommy Gray and Matt Brothers after a double steal to swipe third and second to get into scoring position. Seven more runs came across in that frame after Kage got the party rolling.
Nathan Chasey dominated on the mound with seven shut-out innings allowing only three hits and notching 12 K’s. He was without a doubt the MVP of the game with his performance on the mound.
The Opossum played great defense behind Chasey when needed with 0 errors on nine chances. In the top of the seventh, Matt Gray hit a solo home run to contribute to the final 10-0 championship score. Chasey shut the door, striking out the side on 11 pitches in the final inning. Nathan threw 84 pitches in the game, with 68 of those pitches strikes.
The 2024 League MVP and member of the Opossum, Mark Conrad, fell off a ladder at work right before playoffs, breaking three ribs. He was unavailable for the playoffs but the unanimous MVP logged a season batting avg of .609, 17 RBIs, three home runs, a 1.849 OPS, in addition to pitching over 26 innings this season.
As Coach Jim “Dub” Szucs created for the Opossums 2024 theme, “GO POSS!”
