The New York Wolves defeated the Indians, 4-3 on August 14th to take home the Long Island Midweek 35+ championship.  The back-and-forth contest was a thrilling one, coming down to the very last inning of play.

Indian’s starter Matt Restivo and Wolves’ Bobby Standish battled in a classic pitcher’s duel to keep the fans on the edge of their seats.

The Wolves were stellar defensively, highlighted by huge run-saving plays by Nick Galioto at second base, Kevin DeCapua’s outfield assist, and Jeff Martin’s caught stealing late in the seventh. Long Island Midweek MSBL Logo

Standish on the bump continued his post season dominance, tossing all seven innings allowing just three runs, scattering seven hits, while mowing down 13.

Offensively, the Wolves only managed to muster five hits against Restivo, albeit clutch ones. Will Horan’s clutch hitting (2 hits and 2 RBI), coupled with run scoring singles by Andrew Pfeffer and Dave Dinkelacker proved to be enough to hold on to the victory.

“Our success in large part includes my wife, Jenn,” stated Johnny.  “Managing and playing at the same time is very time consuming but she understands the passion I have for the game and knows how much work I put into it.  We played in two leagues this year and our overall record was 30-6-1.  37 games are a lot to endure!  I want to thank her for understanding and recognizing how important baseball is for me.”

“Before we became the NY Wolves,” continued Billera, “the team was called the Midville Dodgers. We had won 13 championships since the fall of 2003 through 2018.  Our last one with Midville was 2018. Since 2018, we made it to the finals with Midville two consecutive years after that and fell short.

This is our third season with the Wolves. In 2023 as the Wolves, we made it to the finals once again-and lost! So, after all that, this is our first championship with the Wolves!”
