Atlanta MSBL, 35+ Division
Tornados 11, Brewers 10 (Game two in best-of-three championship series sweep)
Submitted by John Ahern, manager
The third-place Tornados took down the first-seed Brewers in great fashion this season by sweeping the best of three championship series of the 35+ Division of the Atlanta MSBL. This earned the Tornadoes their first championship in three years of existence!
The Tornados cruised to a game-one victory over the Brewers by a score of 9-1. Things were looking good in game two, but the Brewers were not going down without a fight. In the top of the seventh, in a seven-inning game with the score 5-3 Tornados, the Brew Crew put up a seven spot to take a 10-5 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
The Tornados, not phased, scratched out five runs to tie it up at 10-10 sending the game into extra innings. After both teams traded turns threatening to score over the next two innings, the Tornados, going into the bottom of the ninth, were able to bring the winning run across the plate ensuring a well-earned victory.
While all the Tornados contributed to this momentous achievement, one player does stand out; Ray Johnson. Ray pitched eleven innings over the two games, striking out seven, only giving up four runs, and issuing only one walk, making him our series and season MVP. Without his dedication and self-sacrifice, this Championship would not have been attainable.
