‘Tigers Also Bring Home World Series Rings as DuPage Angels’
Submitted by John Whitehouse, Tigers manager
The Chicago Central MSBL 53+ Tiger Athletic Association team completed a very successful, multiple rainout-shortened season on October 2, 2022, finishing their league regular season schedule with a 9-1 record and sweeping all three playoff best-of-3 series contests with a 6-0 record.
The Tigers finished their 16 games scoring 198 runs while allowing only 60. Pitching was led by Jack Pohlmeier with a 7-0 record and Matt Fenn at 3-0.
Bill Kazmierczak took the team’s batting title with a .750 average, followed by Rich Capparelli at .630. Five other players exceeded the .500 mark: Mark Nilles (.574), Tom Mangan (.562), Jerry Bornhoff (.514), John Sudges (.513), and Joe Zurawski (.512). Mark Nilles also took RBI honors, knocking in 25.
Eight players from this squad, Mark Nilles, Bill Kazmierczak, Rich Capparelli, John Sudges, Bobby Gillespie, Rolando Quiroga, Ricky Johnson, and Jack Pohlmeier participated in the MSBL World Series in the 50+ National Division Tournament with the DuPage Angels, taking that World Series Championship in convincing fashion!
This was a stressless managerial debut season for me (65+ TSP Chicago Fire and 60+ MAXX Cubs) with my toughest decision being which slugger to place where in this lineup. Great job Tigers!
