2021 Red Sox Sweep Redwings for 30+ National Division Crown in Atlanta Area MSBL

Atlanta Area MSBL, 30+ National Division

Red Sox 3, Redwings 1

The 2021 Red Sox spent the entire spring and summer in first place and finished off a 19-1 season, including a 4-0 playoff record in winning the 30+ National Atlanta Area MSBL Championship.

The Red Sox pitching staff combined for a season ERA of 2.05.  Leading the staff was Andrew Rothenberg (7-0, 42IP, 1.50 ERA, 54Ks) and supported by Don Ferbert (1.89 ERA) and Jason Gilbreth (2.00 ERA).  Leading the way at the plate were Don Ferbert (.533 AVG/15 RBI) and Jeff Burns (.500 AVG/22 R) who hit over .500 for the season.  As a team, the Red Sox hit .385 and averaged just shy of 10 Runs a game (157 Runs).

In the playoffs, the Red Sox swept the Mariners, 2 games to 0 in the semifinal series to move on.  This set up a finals showdown with the reigning champion Redwings, led by their Ace and former Dodgers minor leaguer, Jason West.

In the first game, the Red Sox got out to an early lead scoring four runs through five innings.  The Redwings scored two runs in the top of the sixth to pull closer, but the Red Sox then scored three in the bottom of the sixth to add to the lead.  The Redwings scored one more in the top of the seventh, but the Red Sox were able to close the door and take game one, 7-3.  Andrew Rothenberg pitched a complete game for the win, striking out six.  Dusty Gilbreth (1 3B), Larry Colbert (3 RBI), and Eric Romano (2 2B) led the way at the plate with multi-hit games. All three were a terror on the bases and continued to put themselves into scoring position.

In the second game, both starters pitched very well.  The Red Sox scored one in the second and one more in the third, only to have the Redwings cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third.  The Red Sox scored one more in the top of the sixth and Evers was able to shut the door, going a complete game giving up seven hits and striking out three.  The Red Sox were once again led by Eric Romano with another multi-hit game.  Cliff Ditmore, Jason Gilbreth, and Todd Beaty picked up RBI’s in the clinching win.

Pitching and timely hitting were key in the Red Sox path through the playoffs and in claiming the 2021 AAMSBL National Championship.  Two complete-game victories by Andrew Rothenberg and one complete game with two wins for Chris EversRomano (.538 AVG), Dusty Gilbreth (.500 AVG, 3 2B, 1 3B), and Ferbert (10 RBI, 5 R, 1 HR) led the way at the plate.

This was the second title in the last three years for the Red Sox and are looking forward to defending it in 2022!
