‘Free Agents Shutout Buzzards Behind Pitching of Stonebrook and Hitting Barrage’

(Photos Courtesy of Jane Burkitt) With the Sunday League being shorted this season, and due to the large amount of teams in the 18, 35, and 50 divisions, we were only able to play every other Sunday. We did get to play a 12-game season instead of the usual 18 games. The Free Agents finished the league at 10-2, good enough to get the first-place bye to the championship game. The Buzzards finished at 8-3-1 and had to play the Dragons in the semis to get to the championship game. They won 3-0.
The Free Agents and the Buzzards split their 2 league games with the Free Agents winning 12-10 and losing 6-5, so we knew it was going to be a tough game.
The Free Agents started the game off scoring three in the bottom of the first, two coming from John Daly’s single with the bases loaded. We scored one more in the second, three in the fourth, one in the sixth and closed it out with one in the seventh.
Gary Stonebrook pitched a gem of a game. He gave up only seven hits and had seven strikeouts in his nine innings of pitching. We had 17 hits with Ross McGehee going 3/3 with a double, Steve Welch going 2/3 with three RBI, Bobby Brown going 3/5 with a double and two RBI and John Daly going 3/4 with a double and two RBI.
We would like to thank league president Alan Van Ness for all the hard work he did to keep this league going this year.
