2018 Spokane Hawks Wrap Up Successful Season in Inland Northwest MSBL

Submitted by Kevin Lammerding, Hawks Manager

Our season ended yesterday as the Spokane Angels defeated our Hawks in the 35-over championship game, 10 to 5. The Angels are a really good hitting team and have many players among the league leaders in hitting. They are tough outs. We are/were a first year program that started from a Facebook post and grew into a team. We finished the regular season with a 12-3 mark, first place and the #1 seed going into playoffs. Our team stats, as well as personal stats, were at the top of several categories. This was a pretty impressive year while nobody in our league history has done what we did this year.

Our high points of the year include three come from behind wins, counting a come from behind playoff win when we were down 4-0 against the INW Iron Pigs, my former team. We won that game 7-4. Our low points for 2018 were all injury related and really took a toll on our depth, but everyone bounced back as we were still able to play in the playoffs.

Albert Garza and Mike Koentopp had great seasons, while Mike hit .759 but couldn’t quite qualify for the leader board because he didn’t have the necessary at bats. I personally had a good year, including six home runs and a 4-1 record on the mound. 12 of our 15 players hit over .300 for the year, which I am very proud of considering ten of our players haven’t played ball since high school. They put in a lot of hard work to end up with a season that included a trip to the championship game.

I am grateful to be the head coach of this team and can’t wait to have this crew back for off-season workouts. We’re already excited about next year!
