‘New Breed of New Yorkers Take Charge’

Submitted by Doug Rosenthal, New Yorkers manager

The 2018 version of the New Yorkers just won the 18+A division of the Long Island MSBL. I’ve owned and managed this baseball team (Levittown New Yorkers) since 2003 for 15 years when I had three of my sons play for me. I’ve had my team in the playoffs 14 out of 15 years in the A and AA Divisions. This year I had a new, young and an inexperienced team that was hungry to win the season and league. That’s just what we did.

I had an assistant coach Joe who helped me put the team together while I kept the guys focused. My captain Anthony kept the players in line. The team was 15-5 for the season and 4-0 in the playoffs. We first had to beat the LI Cubs in the semi -finals, then finish up with the Boardy Barn Legends in the championship round. Our pitching and hitting helped us win games all year. We also never gave up as a team and always found a way to come back and win.

As a team we worked out at the indoor batting facility during the winter. We worked together as a team which gave us more wins than we lost. The team was manageable, which helps you win games as well. I was very proud of my players to stay focused and win the championship. We are all looking forward to next season and try for a ‘repeat.’ We last won the title in 2011.

I was a baseball coach at St Mary’s and St Doms Catholic Schools in the Merrick Public School District and I also umpire for the Nassau County Public and Catholic Schools as well. I played on this team while managing up until five years ago at the age of 58. This has been an incredible journey!
