Sacramento MSBL 18+ Open Division
Yankees 6, Cardinals 2‘Joseph Leads on the Mound with 1.24 ERA’
Submitted by Jay Landreth, Yankees manager
The 2016 Sacramento Yankees of the Sacramento MSBL were made up of 11 ex-minor league players who grew up in the Northern California area. Most of the players are
in the mid-late 30’s early 40s. The Magical 2016 season would see the
team rely heavily on the best pitching staff in all of MSBL! The
pitching staff flaunts four guys throwing above 90 mph and the staff put up some
staggering numbers.
Yankee pitchers stuck out 171 batters in 121
innings led by starting pitcher and League MVP Jake Joseph (2nd
rounder NYM). Joseph was 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA and even hit .714 at
the plate in limited plate appearances. Eddie Russell (Florida Marlins) was
6-1 while set up man ‘wild thing’ Kevin Hammond didn’t give up a single
hit all season (8 appearances) while closer Michael Hacker (Boston)
struck out 35 batters in ONLY 13 innings of work. The Sacramento
Yankees are stacked with professional arms and at one point during the
season threw three straight combined NO-Hitters !! Seattle Mariner, San
Diego Padre, and Philadelphia Phillies scouts were frequently at SMSBL
action at Sacramento State with radar guns in hand!
The line-up is just as stacked with speed and power! David Flores (Houston), Jason
Landreth (Pittsburgh), David Hoffman (CA) and James McCabe led the
Yankees offense as the team posted a .361 average and a robust .935 OPS!
The team won 13 games in a row at one point and 16 of 18 to win the
SMSBL Championship! The Sacramento Yankees are managed by Jason
Landreth, and look to defend the title in the coming 2017 SMSBL
18+ OPEN Spring League.
