‘Walk-off Single in Extras Secure Championship’
Submitted by Walt Sawchuck, White Sox manager
Cincinnati, OH – On a perfect day for baseball the Reds and the White Sox faced off for the fourth time in six years in the Championship Game of the Anderson Senior Baseball League. The two squads split their two regular season contests.
The Reds got out of the gate with two runs in the top of first off of White Sox righty Gary Hicks with Mark Siler’s two rbi single. The Whites Sox won the inning when Ray Dill and Chris Vaught both drove in runs.
Both teams scored two more runs in the third (the Reds lead-off man Hector Wong scoring his second run, matching the White Sox lead-off man Ryan Hicks) to make it 5-4 White Sox. Both squads went three innings without either scoring until the seventh inning (our regular last inning) when the Reds drove in the tying run with a two out single. The White Sox loaded the bases but could not plate the winning run.
We went into extra frames……(runner starts on second base – the rule has since been changed). The Reds got two in the top of the inning before being retired. The White Sox got a base hit from Mike Adams and then Chris Vaught plated a run with a single to right. Chuck Gentry drew a long walk to load the bases for Walt Sawchuk. A seeing-eye single through the middle plated the tying and winning runs. Another classic that ended in a walk-off Championship moment!
The Reds finished 10-3 and the White Sox 12-1 for the Spring 2016 session. Pictures of the 2016 White Sox club are shown below:
