‘White Sox Build on Perfect Regular Season to Win Title’

Submitted by Todd Schrenk, Hoosier Baseball League President

The Portage White Sox got it done in 2016, after falling to the Munster Braves in the 2015 Championship. The White Sox got the season started with a bang and never looked back, going 16-0 during the regular season. Late into the regular season, the White Sox would tragically lose a great friend and past player. On July 24, Thomas A Todd Jr. would pass away suddenly while playing basketball. After his untimely death, the White Sox would dedicate their season to the life of Tom Todd.

Going into the playoffs (best of three series) the White Sox would face off against the Duneland Pirates for the first round. The White Sox would continue their winning ways, taking care of the Pirates. In game one the White Sox handed the Pirates a 14-4 loss and then in game two continued their domination with an 18-2 win to get them into the semifinals.

In the semifinals, the White Sox would face off with the Indiana Cubs. In game one of this series, the White Sox would get their first loss of the season with a 4-3 loss. Going into game two, the White Sox were able to force a game three with a 17-1 win over the Cubs. In game three, the Cubs would fight hard but fall to the White Sox 2-0. With the 2-0 win the White Sox punched their ticket into the championship series against a very good Region Brewers team.

In the championship series, the White Sox would go back and forth, in what may have been the best game during the Hoosier Baseball League regular season and playoffs. In the end, the White Sox would get a huge win with a score of 7-6 to put the championship one win away. In game two of the series, the White Sox would get started in the first inning and never looked back, winning 13-0 to win the championship rings.

The Portage White Sox were led all season by Manager Kris Barney and Co-Manager Eddie Tiscareno. On offense, the White Sox were led by 2016 Hoosier Baseball League Hall of Fame inductee Zac Robertson, who had a solid batting average of .561 and Roberto Martinez would lead the team in batting average with a solid .571. Eddie Tiscareno was able to bat a solid .515. On the mound, the White Sox were led with the great pitching of Clark Sterly, who pitched in six games with an ERA of 2.24 with 18 strikeouts. HBL Rookie Casey Young had a solid ERA of 1.75 in four games and struck out 21 batters.
