David ‘Doc’ Charp Takes Charge

Led by the pitching of David Charp and the hitting of Ralph Leef, Gerry Dasey and Mike Lopez, the Jazz defeated the Seals to capture the inaugural league championship with 19-5 and 11-9 wins in the best of three championship series in the Redwood Empire Baseball League 65+ division.

With Matt Dockstader (.536) and Dasey (.536) leading the way, the Jazz captured the regular-season title with a 17-1 record. The Seals, led by pitcher Peter Shifman, handed the Jazz its only loss during the season.

With Al Surges (5-0, 3.90 ERA) and Charp (8-1, 1.96) impressive on the mound, RobertMcGregor (.517, 7 2B, 2 3B), Mark Yanuskiewicz (.507), Leef (.500), Paul Johnson (.481) and Mike Lopez (.444) helped the Jazz roar into the best-of-three championship series with a .414 team batting average.

Charp set the tone in game one of the title series by throwing a complete-game six-hitter and going 4 for 4 at the plate. Surges got the win in the tight second game victory. Leef (8×10 with five runs and six steals), Lopez (4×5) and Dasey (4×5) were the title series batting leaders. Joe Svetlik (4×9) andMonte Nance (4×11) led the Seals, who completed the season 10-9.
