’23-2 Season Claims Championship for Indians in Jacksonville’

Submitted by Joe Hellett, Indians manager

In Game two of the Championship Series the Indians defeated the Angels 14-3 to claim the 2016 Jacksonville MABL championship. This championship is the Indians sixth in the last ten years.

The Indians won on stellar hitting, with the team combining for 15 hits in the game. They were led by Playoff MVP Devon Hellett, who went 2-4 in the game with a double and a triple. Two doubles by Alex Massaroni and a 3-3 performance by catcher Nate Fudala powered the Indians to victory.

Devon earned the MVP by batting .421 with four doubles, a triple, three home runs and driving in nine runs total in five playoff games.

The Angels started out the game on fire getting three hits and driving in two runs off Indians’ winning pitcher Tim Johnson, but failed to hold the lead in the bottom of the first. Angels’ ace pitcher John Jones was not as crisp as he was in previous outings, as he suffered a minor back injury making a diving catch in game one of the series. He was pulled in the bottom of the third, an inning in which the Tribe burst in front scoring three runs.

The Angels rallied a bit in the top of the ninth, getting consecutive hits off of closer Massaroni, only to have the game and season end on a 5-4-3 triple play.

The Indians concluded the season with a 23-2 record, including the playoffs.
