The 2016 Maryland Hawks was a new team in the Chesapeake MSBL started and managed by Billy Sansing and Ivan Mitchell. The championship series consisted of two well fought games in the best of three championship series between the Hawks and the Chesapeake Tides.
In the first game, the Tides came out strong putting up four runs in the first inning but the Hawks answered right back with a two-run home run by Billy Sansing, followed up shortly with a sacrifice fly to bring in the third run. On the mound for the Hawks, Kyle Brooks was then able to hold the Tides to only one more run in the fourth inning as well as one more in the seventh. The Hawks, however, were able to put up two in the third and three more in the fifth giving them an 8-6 win after seven innings.
The second game was even more of a fight than the first and went on to last 10 innings and did not end until after midnight. The lead went back and forth many times ending with a 7-6 victory by the Hawks. Demetrius Morris was on the mound for the Hawks giving up only three earned runs on six hits with nine walks and an amazing 19 strike outs. At the plate, Billy Sansing got on base in all five of his chances with three singles, one double and reached on an error giving him four RBI in five at bats. The Maryland Hawks went on to nominate Billy Sansing as the Championship MVP in a double header well worthy of championship status.
