‘Santiago Notches Two Wins in Sweep’

Submitted by Tony Agosto, MABLNYC League President

In game one of the best of three championship series Silvio Tejada pitched four innings with a torn rotator cuff while giving everything he had, striking out five in four innings, but the Bats came out swinging and left the Rockies down 2-3.

Andy Curel had a 2-run double in the second inning. Silvio was relieved by the Rockies ace Pete Santiago (2015 MABLNYC Cy Young winner) who dominated three innings of relief while striking out four. The Rockies were trailing in the bottom of the fourth inning when Luis Herrera hit a 2-out, 2-run home run to put the Rockies ahead. The bottom of the sixth gave the Rockies some breathing room when Johnathan Noel hit a 2-out double to make the score 5-3. Santiago earned the victory in game one.

In game two the Rockies bats came out smoking, giving veteran right-hander Jose Hawky Dejesus a 10-2 lead by the bottom of third inning. The Bats scrapped and fought back and by the sixth inning the Rockies 8-run lead diminished to a 2-run lead. In the top of the sixth inning the Bats had bases loaded and no outs and were down by only two while the Rockies yet again called on Ace right-hander Pete Santiago to keep the lead safe. The Bats, however, had other plans and scored two more runs and tied the game 10-10. The Rockies got a bases load walk by Alex Oates in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead 11 to 10.

Pete Santiago pitched the top of the seventh and last inning. Santiago shut the Bats down for the victory. Pete won both games of the double header as the Rockies became Champions again for the third straight year.
