‘Comeback Bulldogs’ Sweep the Foxes in NE Wisconsin’

By Mike Beschta & Rich Palzewic,

GREEN BAY, WI – The Bay Area Bulldogs are your Northeast Wisconsin Men’s Senior Baseball League (NEW MSBL) champs for 2016 and they did it in dramatic fashion.

The Bulldogs beat the Appleton Foxes in the championship series on August 28 by winning two games at Green Bay Southwest High School, 5-4 and 13-10. In both games, Bay Area trailed big early and clawed its way back to come out on top. The championship series was a best-of-three format.

The doubleheader sweep gave the Bulldogs a 14-2 overall season record and avenged an earlier-season loss to the Foxes, where they watched a 10-3, eighth-inning lead disappear in a 13-10 loss. Appleton ended its season at 10-6.

The Foxes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one, but Bay Area eventually led 5-4 going into the top of the ninth. With the Bulldogs’ Sean Grabig on the mound, Appleton loaded the bases with nobody out, but the lefty got three consecutive outs – including a strikeout to end it – to preserve the victory.

In game two, the Foxes led 8-0 after four innings before Bay Area put up two in the fifth and nine in the sixth to take an 11-7 lead. After Appleton closed to within a pair of runs in the seventh, the Bulldogs added two insurance runs in the ninth to close things out. Kevin Hoppe picked up the win on the mound in his five innings of relief and gave up just two runs.

Other members of the team are: Mike Beschta, Corey Dahl, Troy Doering, John Drella, Jon Haight, Chris Laux, Jeremy Leirmo, Casey Meinecke, Andy Paasch, Rich Palzewic and Jeff Thomas.
