September 23, 2015– The MSBL-A Division Championship took place between the Southern Colorado Pirates (two-time Champs) and the Colorado Springs Angels (four-time Champs). The Pirates have outscored their opponents 161-27, while the Angels have outscored their opponents 83-43 this season in division play. These two teams have faced each other four of the last five seasons in this match-up. The Pirates have won the Championship in 2012 and 2014while the Angels won in 2011 and 2013.
On September 20th, game one of a double header, the Angels beat the Pirates 8-2 behind Lamont Hicks’ complete game pitching as well as his 3-run homer. The Pirates hit the ball but just right at the Angels and could not duplicate the offense they are used to generating. Game two was a different story. Sloan Soulia pitched a complete game shutout leading the Pirates over the Angels 6-0. This caused the two teams to play the championship game three for the second year in a row.
On September 23rd the two teams faced off at Spurgeon Field in Memorial Park. The game started off with the two team’s pitchers controlling the pace through three innings. But the Pirates struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs and followed it in the bottom of the sixth inning with three more. In the top of the seventh the Angels fired back scoring four runs making it a one run game. In the bottom of the eighth the Pirates scored what led to be the game winning run when Russ Mannix hit a double down the right field line. In the top of the ninth the Angels fought back scoring a run, but ran out of gas as Sloan Soulia shut them down.
