2014 Christmas Bail Bonds Red Sox Win First Title in LA
LA MSBL Saturday Wood American
Christmas Bail Bonds Red Sox 9, Squires 6
Contributed by Charlie Hollom, Red Sox manager
Missing our two main pitchers, our third string guy, Eddie Urquiza, came in and manhandled one of the best hitting teams we have ever faced, the Squires. Jerry Whitaker, who waited all season to get the game ball, came in to shut the door. Mike Velez showed why he is who he is and dominated at the plate leading the way. Although a valiant effort on a comeback, the Christmas Bail Bonds Red Sox and manager Charlie Hollom come away champs with a 9-6 victory over the Squires.
We lost our mascot of seven years, ‘Boss Hollom’ (white English bull dog), three weeks before the championship game so his ashes were spread before the game at every base and then after the game was over he was buried at the score board and got to be a part of the championship. We all played for him. It was a very emotional win for this team that fought so hard for me all year through torn biceps and missing players, due to work and injuries, but it just seemed like we were destined to win.
Our slogan after game six was do more with less and we did!!!…Hollom
Added Squires manager Robert Simon, “The LA Squires decided to go by an alter ego this season ‘Los Guapos de Los Estados Unitos.’ The hope was that the name change would allow them to avenge our championship loss in 2013. It did not, as the team fell in the Championship once again. However, it was one hell of a season.” Los Guapos are led by their manager/player Robert Simon, who, these days, admittedly spends more time in the dugout making jokes than actually on the base pads. “The team was fortunate enough to have three of the top five batters in the league,” continued Simon, “including Eric Anderson, who, once again, led the league in batting average. He is a likely candidate for MVP as he was also the team’s catcher and pitched. Newcomers Justin McKeeney and Drew Rogers absolutely mashed this season and almost dethroned Anderson for the batting crown. We fell short and had to settle for the home run king (McKeeney) and slugging percentage king (Rogers). Los Guapos vow to return next year: bigger, stronger, faster, and … funnier!” Here is a speech given by Red Sox manager Hollom the day before the championship:
“Men, tomorrow at this time hold me back. I will be breathing fire to get at them. That’s the first thing I need from you guys tomorrow. Second thing is to remain patient. This is a thinking man’s game and don’t make too much out of one play or one at bat. If we play loose, we win. Make jokes and have a blast. We will not lose focus because that’s what Mike V. and Charlie are there for. Play your position better and harder than you ever have. Shine tomorrow. Be a beast, but one that’s calm. One that’s been there before. One that is…. a champion!!!
And that’s what this year has been all about. It’s not about how we started. It’s not about our playoff game that was a close win. It’s not about any of our stats tomorrow. It’s not about just winning……It’s really about winning together.
Think about that and what that means. Imagine what it’s like when you get to look in your brother’s eye and say ‘long mission accomplished’. I have a few of you to hug afterwards and that’s gonna be a great moment. I can’t wait.
Nothing will divide us. Nothing will come between us. They will try and we will roll threw them to get to each other.I love you guys for putting up with my sick passion for this game. I appreciate the momentum we have together and respect the fact that nothing is guaranteed except we will be as one tomorrow and win. So know that I’m here and have your back. Look to me if things don’t go 100%. I will find a way to make us get there. We are a team.
And there is a saying that you never go to war with hired help. We bring our friends. And when the going gets tough who do you want around you? Your friends….. and I have that with you guys. We couldn’t have a better group of men. Go get ‘em tomorrow for each other and ‘Boss’….”
