Houston Hardball League 45+ Fall League Division
A’z 5, Angels 1
Submitted by Ward Brigham, Houston A’z
The Houston A’z won the Championship Game of the 45+ Division of the Houston Hardball League for the Fall Season. This marks their second consecutive championship, having also won the championship from the Spring Season. The A’z defeated the Angels 5-1 in the final, winner-take-all game.
The A’z were led by strong starting pitching of Marvin Keller, who allowed one run in the first inning but then settled down to throw goose eggs for the remaining eight innings. Marvin scattered seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
The A’z captured the lead in the fourth inning, scoring four runs highlighted by Jay Henderson’s RBI single and Ward Brigham’s two out, two-RBI single. Marvin capped off the inning in helping his own cause by getting the final RBI single, the first of two he had on the day.
The A’z also beat the Angels 4-1 in the winner’s bracket during a chilly, 45 degree evening. They fell to the Angels 13-6 in the first game of the championship, setting up the final, winner-take-all game of the double elimination tournament.
Congratulations to manager Gordon “Boz” Boswell, GM Shaun Coleman, and the rest of the Houston A’z for their second championship of the year!
