Rick Ganey Still Going Strong after Nearly 30 Years in Mid-South (Memphis) MSBL
Submitted by Paul Tingley, Memphis MSBL League President
Rick Ganey is a member of the World Team in the Memphis MSBL Whit Agee 55+ League. At 71, he is the oldest member of the team, but he still holds his own as a reliable outfielder who can run down just about anything hit his way. He still has wheels!
Rick was not a high school or college baseball star, but that has never stopped him from pursuing his passion for the game. Born in Augusta, Georgia, he graduated from the University of Missouri–Columbia (Mizzou) with a degree in business.
Rick moved to the Memphis area in 1996 and began playing in the MSBL 40+ League in 1998. He has been playing ever since.
“When I first started, we just slapped together a team,” Rick recalls. “We were the Bombers, and we were horrible. But it was still fun.”
Rick met his wife of more than 40 years in St. Louis and remains a devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan. Together they have three children.
Rick says he plans to keep playing as long as he can perform at a “reasonable level.” At age 71, he is certainly doing just that.
When asked what his favorite part of the game is, Rick’s answer is simple: “Being with the boys.”
When baseball is your passion, simply standing on the field with friends who share that passion is often enough.
