Reverchon Park’s Century-old Baseball Field Reopens in Dallas

The North Texas Amateur Baseball League LogoSince 1988, the North Texas Amateur Baseball Foundation has called #ReverchonPark home. But with shrinking budgets, the passing of field caretaker HB Kernodle, and other priorities, the history of the Ballfield in the corner of the historic park seemed to have lost popular support and was doomed to disrepair. In fact, it wasn’t until private corporations expressed interest in developing the field and successfully winding its way all the way through the City Council that the citizens finally woke up and realized what was going on. And now we have our field back!

Not to be forgotten, for over 20 years the North Texas Amateur Baseball League donated money, materials, and labor partnering with the Friends of Reverchon Park and the Scottish Rite for Children thru the #ReverchonRoundup Park Cleanup every spring to keep the field usable and to update the rest of the park’s stonework, Iris Garden and trails. But in the latter years of the 20-teens, poor drainage, turf conditions, and more led to the field being closed for use for all intents and purposes.

Then, almost on life support, the local citizens, the league, the City of Dallas, and Dallas Independent School District finally held off the privateers and raised the money needed to restore the field. It wasn’t without a lot of doubters. In fact, even Gerry Mecca’s teammates at the North Texas Amateur Baseball Foundation bet it would never happen. You don’t know Gerry!

We owe a debt of gratitude to so many people, but at the outset, the partnership between the Friends of Reverchon Park, the Scottish Rite for Children, and Gerry Mecca kept this dream alive, and now it’s become a reality. Thanks to all who made it happen. “How can you not feel romantic about baseball?” Here’s to another 100 years!

Also, the Southern Methodist University baseball team played at the ballpark from 1977 to 1980, before the baseball program disbanded after the 1980 season.

“Reverchon Park’s Century-old Baseball Field Reopens after Stunning Renovation, Blending Historic Charm with Modern Amenities for Future Generations of Players”

A century-old baseball landmark in Dallas has been given new life through an extensive renovation project. Reverchon Park’s baseball field, which dates back to the 1920s, reopened its gates on Saturday, April 26, following a meticulous two-year restoration that preserved its historic charm while adding modern amenities.

The $5.5 million renovation project, a joint initiative between the City of Dallas and Dallas Independent School District, per The Dallas Morning News, has transformed the facility into a state-of-the-art baseball venue while maintaining its historical significance. The project centered on carefully restoring the original grandstand and implementing comprehensive upgrades throughout the facility.

Modern improvements meet historical preservation

Parks and recreation director John Jenkins explained what these improvements mean for the historical field. “We’re talking about steel that was put in here 70 years ago, and we were able to preserve and put in new steel, able to preserve the grandstand. We upgraded the ballfields, put in new irrigation, resodded, put in new fencing, new lighting, and a new scoreboard.”

The renovated facility features several key improvements, including:
– A newly regraded field with natural grass turf
– Upgraded bullpens
– New dugouts
– Modern restroom facilities
– A concession building is also in the works and will be completed in the near future.

The reopening celebration featured a special ceremony that brought together multiple generations of athletes who once played on these historic grounds. The event culminated in a baseball game featuring the North Dallas High School Bulldogs, who call Reverchon Park their home field.

Reverchon Park, established in 1914, spans 41.3 acres and continues to serve as a vital community space in Dallas. The baseball field’s renovation ensures that this historic venue will continue to host America’s favorite pastime for generations to come.
