MSBL Mid-Year Spotlight: Brian Black, Chesapeake Angels, 21+ Mick Myers East Division, Chesapeake MSBL
Submitted by Chris Braden
Since joining the Chesapeake Angels of the Chesapeake MSBL in 2019, Brian Black has been the ultimate utility weapon, anchoring the pitching staff while delivering consistent production across the diamond. Whether taking the ball as a starter, locking down games in relief, or filling in at nearly every defensive position, Brian is the definition of versatility.
From turning double plays to outfield assists and even donning the catcher’s gear when called upon, there’s little he hasn’t done for the Angels.
At the plate, Black remains a reliable presence. His .273 average and .415 OBP this season reflect his patient, competitive approach—always grinding out tough at-bats.
A highlight came in the team’s third game of the year versus the defending champion Patriots: Black ripped a clutch RBI double that gave the Angels breathing room, then returned to the mound to close the door with two scoreless innings and earn the save.
So far, Black has compiled a 3–2 record with a 1.78 ERA, converting both of his save opportunities. Even his losses were hard-luck outcomes, including a 2–1 walk-off loss after a brilliant 3-inning, 6-strikeout relief outing, and a 1-hit, 5-inning gem where he received a no-decision in another narrow 2–1 loss.
As the Angels surge to a 14–3 record, Brian Black’s all-around contributions have been the backbone of their success. Whether on the mound, in the field, or at the plate, he simply delivers.
