MABL/MSBL Player of the Week: Carl Detert, Puget Sound Senior Baseball League
By Steve LaMontia, Director of Communications
Our goal at MSBL is to recognize any outstanding efforts from across the country. Our ‘Players of the Week’ stories are not designed to honor just one person per week, but multiple players if warranted. We have plenty of space so keep them coming! Please forward any recommendations to me at [email protected].
Carl Detert plays in the Puget Sound Senior Baseball League and is nearing his 55th birthday in October. He has recently touched on a couple of amazing milestones, along with being a longtime MSBL World Series competitor. I left Carl’s comments in his own words, as he is quite a talented orator. Congratulations on your recent achievements, Carl!
“The first one occurred last year on July 8th in a 50+ game between my K.C. Monarch team and the Seattle Steelheads.
During the game, I struck out my 2,500th player and went on to throw a 158-pitch complete game with 10 total K’s, which garnered win number 198 in my career.
As you may likely guess the second milestone occurred this season also with the K.C. Monarchs and happened on May 14th against the Everest Ravens. On that day I threw six innings to pick up my 200th career victory.
My team regularly gives me grief about the number of pitches I throw in a game. Pitch to contact they say, but I like striking guys out so if it takes 160, that’s ok. I know a really good orthopedic surgeon!
I started in the Puget Sound Senior Baseball League back in 1993 playing with the ‘Carolina’ Mudcats in the 25+ division. Over the years I’ve moved on and played long years in the 30+ and 40+ divisions before moving to the 50+ division a few years ago. This season I’m trying to split my time pitching for a 40+ team to help them out as a few of their pitchers rehab injuries, including Jeff Cirillo, former Brewer and Mariner third baseman.
I’ve won two World Series rings, a 35 and over Central Division ring in 2007 and a 40 and over Open Division ring in 2015. For the former title I picked up the save in the final tossing the last two innings and for the latter ring I was the starting and winning pitcher of the Championship game garnering MVP honors. In 2023 I attended the Seattle Mariners Fantasy Camp where I also won a ‘Championship’.
I’ve probably played in 15-18 World Series so you may have seen me down there at one point or another. I took last year off as I went a little too enthusiastically during the Mariner Fantasy Camp I mentioned and wound up with a grade-two strain of my flexor bundle!
Regarding my World Series experience, I played three or four years with Tom’s (League President Krause) PSSBL Gators team, several years with the Seattle Blues early in my career, and the Seattle Mariners. More recently I’ve played with the Seattle Frickin’ A’s and my last trip down was with the 50+ National division 3n2 Rangers.”
Cheers,
Carl Detert
