Long Island MABL/MSBL Veteran Donald Hein Passes Away at 58

Submitted by Jim Forde, Long Island MABL/MSBL

With a heavy heart, we are sad to announce the sudden passing at age 58 of long-time Long Island MABL/MSBL player Donald Hein, who was playing most recently for the Long Island Tides and the Orioles.  Many current teammates of “Donnie Baseball” had been with him for over two decades at various age divisions in Long Island.  The universal response to this untimely loss from everyone who heard the news was that Donnie was the ultimate teammate, willing to do whatever he was asked to contribute and help his fellow ballplayers and the team.

Never a bad word to say of anyone, and never a complaint or criticism – – – just a total love of the game and a dedication to winning.  Donnie was a manager’s dream, always ready to step up, grab a bat, and drive a base hit up the middle in a tight spot.  Aside from that, his dedication and support of his teammates were unwavering.  He loved the game, he loved his teams, and we loved him right back. His #9 is being retired and will remain a reminder to all of his teammates of a void that cannot be filled.
