Bob Sherwin Embarks on 5th Iron Phi Challenge to Raise Money to Help Fight ALS, and You Can Help!

Once again, I’m reaching out to tap your generosity as I embark on my 5th Iron Phi Challenge to raise money for the Live Like Lou Foundation through the Iron Phi Program of Phi Delta Theta (my college fraternity).  Please see my bio/participation page for my history, mission, and why I do this.  Lou Gehrig….aka The Iron Man, was one of the greatest baseball players ever.  Lou was a Phi Delt at Columbia University before starting his baseball career, which resulted in 2130 consecutive games… a record held for decades; thus, the nickname The Iron Man.  Lou’s last game was in 1939, when he was forced to stop playing due to symptoms that turned out to be ALS.  Phi Delta Theta, through its Live Like Lou Foundation and the Iron Phi Program, raises money for ALS research and to support families affected by this horrible, fatal disease.

On 10/17/26, I will start my 5th Iron Phi challenge to raise another $10K.  Yes, at age 78, I’m probably the oldest Phi Delt to achieve Iron Phi status…recognition usually reserved for the young active membership across the country.  While playing baseball in the MSBL World Series in Arizona, I will throw 1939 pitches over the three weeks I participate.  Playing with five teams in different age brackets will require a lot of bullpen sessions along with my time on the mound in the 65, 70, 73, 75, and yes… the 80+ age groups.

My mom, who died of ALS, is always looking down and smiling that I’m doing what I can to help find a cure for this disease, which took her life way too soon.
