MABL/MSBL Player of the Week: Bob Altobelli, Capital District MSBL, Albany, New York
By Steve LaMontia, Director of Communications
Our goal at MSBL is to recognize any outstanding efforts from across the country. Our ‘Players of the Week’ stories are not designed to honor just one person per week, but multiple players if warranted. We have plenty of space so keep them coming! Please forward any recommendations to me at [email protected].
Lex Herrlett is the manager of the Yankees of the 55-over division of the Capital District MSBL located in and around Albany, New York. Lex wrote us with his nominee for Player of the Week. I will stand aside and allow Rex to explain his amazing nominee and the amazing game. It is truly one for the ages!
“We recently played the Pirates and came back to win 15-7 after being down 6-3 in the fourth inning, explained Lex. “That’s when Bob Altobelli took matters into his own hands. Bob is the most humble guy ever, a great family man, and is our team’s Pastor. He always says a team prayer before every game as we huddle up. The prayers certainly worked on this day. (Below is a picture of Bob as part of the 2022 50-over, Central Division Fall Classic champion Yankees)
Bob had a game for the ages! In his first at-bat on the best all-turf field in the area, he hit an RBI triple to the wall. In his second at-bat, he hit a double to right field over the fielder’s head that rolled to the wall. In his third at-bat, guess WHAT? Even though the right fielder took a few steps back, it wasn’t back far enough! Bob pounded another double over his head to the wall!
They finally smarted up and intentionally walked him in his next at-bat. In Bob’s fifth at-bat, the right fielder was playing one step from the wall! But it didn’t matter. Bob hit one just above his glove off the wall for another double! On the day he was 4-4, with three doubles, a triple, and an intentional walk! His new nickname is “Two-Base Bobby.”
