‘Torres Leads the Angels on the Bump and at the Plate’
Submitted by Robert Oskin, Angel’s manager
The Montebello Angels opened up their first tournament of the year in the MSBL Desert Classic in Palm Springs going undefeated to win the 45-over National Division by defeating the Wine County Blue Jays 10-3.
The Angels went through pool play with great pitching performances from Bobby Yanez, Eddie Nava, and Yoshan Brizuelas. The way the format was set up, and by being the number one seed overall in both brackets by allowing the least amount of runs in pool play by barely one run, allowed the Angels to go straight to the National Championship.
This allowed the Angels to call upon Andy Torres for the start of the championship. Torres did not disappoint and was in control the entire game going the distance along with 13 strikeouts. Not only did he throw a superb game but also went 3 for 4 at the plate with a triple, double, and single.
Our offense was well balanced all tourney from the entire team but was overall led by Brandon Hedding, Rudy Burruel, Armando Alcantar, and Frank Rodriguez. I’m very proud of our team once again and the victory provided just a wonderful weekend.
With everything going on in the world with COVID, as our own team lost two players during the week leading up to the tourney, I must say Steve Sigler managed to put on a great tournament with wonderful conditions, weather, and a competitive 14 teams in our bracket.
