The 54+ Yonder Travelers added another remarkable chapter to the organization’s championship legacy by capturing the 2026 MSBL Stars & Stripes Tournament Championship in West Palm Beach, Florida. Against one of the strongest and most competitive fields assembled in recent memory, the Travelers completed a perfect 6-0 tournament run, proving once again that championship baseball is built on pitching, defense, timely hitting, and the kind of brotherhood that transforms teammates into family.
The road to the title was anything but easy.
Entering the tournament, Yonder suffered several key injuries, reducing the playing roster to just 12 players. Rather than viewing it as a disadvantage, the team embraced the challenge. Inspired by the movie 12 Strong, the Travelers adopted the motto “12 Strong” and rallied around the idea that every player would be counted on to contribute in every aspect of the game. Throughout the week, that mindset became the driving force behind one of the most memorable championship runs in team history.
At the center of the Travelers’ success was Tournament MVP Kirt Bennett, who delivered one of the finest pitching performances ever seen in a Yonder uniform. Bennett earned three victories, including masterful complete-game wins in both the Semifinal and Championship Game. Time and again, he rose to the occasion in pressure-packed situations, keeping powerful opposing offenses off balance while demonstrating the poise and leadership that have become his trademark.
The final two games of the tournament tested every ounce of Yonder’s resolve.
In the Semifinal, the Travelers faced a talented and battle-tested Mustangs squad. Locked in a tightly contested game, Yonder once again leaned on Bennett’s complete-game effort. With the game hanging in the balance late, Steve Frellick delivered the decisive blow, driving in the go-ahead runs that propelled the Travelers into the championship game. Bennett then shut down the Mustangs in their final 2 at-bats with 6 straight outs to close the game.
The Championship Game against the formidable Astros proved even more dramatic.
For much of the entire game, Yonder found itself trailing in a tense pitchers’ duel. Bennett matched the Astros inning for inning, refusing to allow the game to slip away. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning and down to their final opportunities, the Travelers showed the resilience that had defined their entire week. With two outs, Scott Marabell ripped a clutch double, bringing life to the Yonder dugout. Moments later, Steve Frellick delivered again, lining a single that scored Marabell and tied the game at 1-1.
Bennett came out & mowed-down the side in the top of the 9th. With momentum finally on their side, the Travelers carried the fight into the bottom of the ninth.
Yonder scrapped its way to bases loaded, and then with 2 outs, Frank Chandler stepped to the plate and delivered the championship moment. Chandler’s walk-off single sent the winning run home and sparked a celebration that reflected six games of determination, sacrifice, and belief. The dramatic 2-1 victory secured another championship trophy for the Travelers and cemented the 2026 Stars & Stripes Tournament as one of the organization’s most memorable accomplishments.
While the late-game heroics grabbed the headlines, this championship was truly the result of a complete team effort.
Yonder’s defense was exceptional throughout the tournament. Critical plays & steady defense from Rudy Cesario, Erik Roberts, Felix Soto Toro, and Steve Frellick repeatedly shut down opponents’ rallies and preserved key victories. Whether turning difficult plays into outs, making crucial stops in the infield, or delivering under pressure, the Travelers’ defense consistently rose to the occasion.
Offensively, Yonder’s lineup produced timely hits whenever they were needed most. Strong tournament performances from Erik Roberts, Steve Frellick, Scott Marabell, and Frank Chandler helped fuel the offense throughout the week. Every player contributed in meaningful ways, demonstrating the depth and unselfishness that have become hallmarks of the Travelers program.
The pitching staff was equally dominant from start to finish. In addition to Bennett’s MVP performance, Mike Kostrzewa delivered two outstanding complete-game victories that proved pivotal to the championship run. Lincoln Moquette also authored a brilliant complete-game win, giving the Travelers an extraordinary run of pitching excellence throughout the tournament.
Leadership came from every corner of the dugout. Veterans Mike Kalfopoulos, Raffi Hernandez, and Rob Kluba provided steady play throughout the tourney & brought veteran leadership, guidance, energy, and encouragement that helped keep the club focused through every challenge.
Ultimately, the 2026 MSBL Stars & Stripes Championship was about more than wins and losses. It was about twelve players embracing adversity, trusting one another, and playing for something bigger than themselves. The “12 Strong” mentality became more than a slogan—it became the identity of a championship team.
In an exceptionally competitive tournament field, the Yonder Travelers once again demonstrated that talent alone does not win championships. Brotherhood does. Trust does. Sacrifice does.
For six unforgettable games in West Palm Beach, the Travelers embodied all three.
And when the final out was recorded and the celebration began, another Yonder championship was secured through the power of family, perseverance, and the unwavering belief that together, they were truly 12 Strong.
