PALM SPRINGS STADIUM, Jan. 16, 2012 – Kevin Brown threw a complete-game and Steve Fisher had four hits and three RBI as the Stanislaus Indians defeated the Montebello Angels 10-2 for the Desert Classic 35 National division crown.

The Indians scored three runs in the second, two in the third and two in the fourth to build a 7-0 lead after four innings. Brown gave up two runs on nine hits while striking out five on the day. “This was definitely a hard fought tournament, considering we almost didn’t make it to the playoffs,” said Indians’ Manager Clint Romero. “We had a couple games that got away, and then a third game that almost did.

We had to get an extra inning victory to get here, so we were fortunate that we had a little bit of luck on our side. The bottom line is we took care of business when we needed to” Romero added.

Steve Fisher

Fisher led the Indians’ 16-hit parade with four hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. A last minute addition due to injury, Fisher hit .550 (11 for 20), with a double and seven RBIs — numbers that earned him co-MVP honors with Phil Torretto. Romero hit .368 (7 for 19), with two doubles, a triple and three RBI. For the Angels, Mario Chavarin was 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI-double in the ninth inning that scored Gabe Carmona. Armando Alcantar had an RBI-single in the eighth inning that scored Rudy Burrell with the Angels’ other run.

Angels Manager Robert Oskin felt his team got off to a bad start, but gave credit to the Indians. “We pretty much just came out flat,” he said. “It proved to be too much for us to overcome, but give them credit, their pitcher pitched a great game.” he said. Oskin also was impressed with this year’s tournament field .

Phill Torretto

“Best tournament we’ve been in in terms of competition — very well balanced,” Oskin said.

“It’s always great to face strong competition, it makes it fun” he said. “We’ll definitely be back. We won this tournament two years ago, so hopefully we get the opportunity to win it once again.” he said.

And perhaps it could be the same Indians’ team once again

“We beat these guys in November in Arizona, so maybe this is the start of a rivalry with these guys,” Oskin said.”I’m pretty sure we’ll see them again down the road”
