MSBL World Series Participation ‘Gary the Gazelle’ Yeager Receives National Senior Games Association Honor as ‘Athlete of the Month’
By Steve LaMontia, Director of Communications
75-year-old Gary Yeager has been an MSBL World Series participant for many years and is also a renowned National Senior Games Association participant. As a reward for his dedication and hard work, Gary was recently honored as the NSGA ‘Athlete of the Month!’
We caught up with Gary and asked how this all came about.
“I started my World Series participation with Jay Ciambrone and the SoCal Fire and then Donnie de Cordova and his Cal Vets in 2019. I am honored to play for two MSBL Hall of Fame managers. I play exclusively with the Cal Vets now.
I have played 60’s, 65’s, 70’s, and 73’s at the World Series, and this year at 75, I will add that to my resume. Last year I played 16 games in 19 days in three age groups. It helps that I live in Phoenix.
I won’t play on all those teams this year. I have to run a Senior Olympic Game qualifying race during October and those take some additional personal preparation.
My Dodger connection, as mentioned in the article, is my cousin Steve Yeager, the catcher from back in the 1970’s. We were going to meet up at Dodger Fantasy Camp last year, but he had a health issue and couldn’t make it. The Dodgers gave me his jersey as a consolation. My trip to Dodger Fantasy Camp was like a dream come true nevertheless.”
We’ll see you in Phoenix next month!
