Mustangs Baseball Club 6, Yonder Travelers 2

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — In chilly conditions on Florida’s Gulf Coast, the Mustangs Baseball Club delivered a near-flawless performance when it mattered most, defeating the powerhouse Yonder Travelers, 6–2, to capture the championship in impressive fashion.

Facing one of the tournament’s most formidable opponents, the Mustangs leaned on Tournament MVP Vincent Towns, who set the tone on the mound in the title game. Towns was dominant, surrendering just two runs while keeping Yonder’s potent lineup in check throughout the decisive contest.

Pitching proved to be the backbone of the Mustangs’ four-day run. Towns, along with Sam Steed, Ray Davis, player-manager Chris Dunn, and Carlos Espada, formed a steady and reliable staff that consistently delivered under pressure. Their collective effort kept opponents off balance and gave the Mustangs a chance to win every time they took the field.

While many tournaments are defined by eye-popping statistics, this championship was the product of a true team effort. The Mustangs’ defense was exceptional from start to finish, complementing the stellar pitching performances. As is often the case in baseball, strong arms and steady gloves worked hand in hand.

Behind the plate, catchers Mike Burton and Erik Cary anchored the defense while also providing timely contributions at the plate.Baseball pitcher mid-throw on the field.

The middle infield trio of Derrick Smalling, Jeff Newman, and Pedro Guzman was superb, turning key double plays and shutting down opposing rallies before they could gain momentum.

At third base, Steve Hutchinson and George Kerst controlled the hot corner and delivered big hits in the heart of the lineup.  In addition to pitching two gems himself, giving up zero runs over 15 innings, Sam Steed turned in stellar play at first base when he wasn’t dominant on the mound.

The outfield faced its own challenges during an adventurous week marked by rain, fog, and swirling winds. Nico DiGioia, Mark Flores, and Rusty Anderson rose to the occasion, tracking down fly balls in difficult conditions and limiting extra-base damage.

Espada, typically an infielder and the team’s lead-off hitter, showcased his versatility after transitioning to the outfield. His running back-handed catch in right field late in the championship game proved to be a pivotal defensive gem that helped seal the victory.

Managers Chris Dunn and Jim Filicetti masterfully balanced strategy and teamwork, positioning players for success while ensuring that everyone contributed during the tournament run. Their leadership was evident not only in the lineup card but in the unity displayed throughout the roster.

The Mustangs’ triumph would not have been complete without the unwavering support of their traveling fans, who braved the same elements as the team. Denise, Veronica, Michelle, and the entire Davis family were among those cheering from the stands, providing energy and encouragement every step of the way.
