Mustangs Baseball Club 10, Trash Pandas 4
Submitted by Mike LaComb, Mustangs manager
This year’s Vegas Kickoff had excellent weather, terrific fields, and lots of strong teams. The Mustangs went undefeated, as they were 5-0 through the round-robin and the playoffs. But, not without some tough competition.
In our first game, Mustangs pitcher Scott McIntosh held off the scrappy Fresno Knights in a game that was 2-1 going into the eighth inning before the team finally got Scott some runs.
Both Wilson Reyes and Alan Mow dominated their starts versus the Hammerheads and the Calzona Sting.
DJ Carassco pitched a hard-fought complete game in the semifinals versus the Calzona Sting.
Vince Towns pitched the championship over a resilient Trash Pandas team. The Pandas were also undefeated coming into the finals.
Dennis Hoffman notched two saves over the weekend. Rick Clough, Jerry Anderson, and Robert Calvert all took the mound for some innings.
Tim Leahy and Jerry Anderson handled the pitching staff with their catching prowess and shut down the running game with their strong arms.
The Mustangs offense was as strong as ever. Mike Elizondo led the team with an OBP of .800. Right behind him was Alan Mow at .700, DJ Carassco at .692, Ernie Lujan at .632, and Rick Clough at .600. Vince Towns, JP Pendergast, Tomas Rodriguez, Derick Smalling, Ralph Rodriguez, Jerry Anderson, and Nick Arico all had OBPs over .500, with Dennis Hoffman and Jose Espinosa clutch hitting with OBPs over .400.
Tom Taylor was the bench coach of the team, using his baseball knowledge and tips.
In the championship game, Vince Towns hit for the cycle with a walk-off grand slam! Vince was named tournament MVP.
