By Steve LaMontia-Carlentini, Director of Communications

League name: Delaware Adult Baseball League

Your name: Louis Tomczak

What is the history of the league, and how did it start? This league has been around for many years under different names and presidencies, but the current league name and leadership have been in place since 2024.

What age divisions of play are now offered? Ages 23+

How many teams are anticipated this year? The 2025 season is operating with eight teams.

When does the league begin play and when will it finish, including any playoffs? We typically have our Opening Day the first Sunday after Easter and wrap up the playoffs a little after Labor Day (exact date depends on the number of rainouts)

When did you personally start playing in the league? My first year playing and managing my team was in 2022.

What is your personal baseball playing history? Little League and then played two years in a NABA league in Harrington, DE, until the league collapsed once the president moved on.

When did you become president? I became president in 2024.

Who were your predecessors, and are they still involved in any capacity? My previous predecessor was Ryan Hunter. He is currently coaching a college team.Delaware Adult Baseball League logo.

What is your most memorable MSBL moment as a president or a player? My favorite moment as a player in this league was doubling in the bottom of the 9th and scoring on a single to walk it off in my first year.

What challenges did you face when you started the league or when you took over? When we took over for the previous president, the biggest issue was organizing all of the responsibilities and understanding the breadth of the duties of each person in the leadership team.

What are your biggest challenges today? Besides weather cooperating, our main concerns are potential last-minute cancellations or changes in umpires or fields.

What gives you the greatest satisfaction? Planning and communication ahead of time lead to a successful outcome on the field.

What do you see for the league in the future? I would like to see the league expand back to 10 or maybe even 12 teams, potentially even having another division/league that we play some games with.

What is the reason for the continued success of the league? The passion of the managers to sustain the league and ensure its continued success.

What part of running the league do you enjoy most? Ensuring that the league puts the priorities of all teams into consideration when making decisions.

Do you still play in the league? Yes. In addition to being league president, I am a player and manager for the Minutemen.

What is the history of your league team’s participation in any MSBL national tournaments? We haven’t had any participation in national tournaments since I have been a part of this league. I don’t know the MSBL tournament history before my time here.

What would you say are the most important accomplishments in your league? Consistently providing the opportunity for us grown men to go out and play a kids’ game as a break from our daily lives. This not only helps to improve the lives of the players, but also the families that we go home to.

How valuable is your relationship with MSBL? MSBL is a crucial partner in our league being able to function. Not only is it a requirement for our fields to have liability insurance, but they are very helpful with questions we may have about how to handle league situations and disputes when they arise.

What advice would you give to new league presidents? Ensure that you have help with running your league. You cannot do everything on your own, so surround yourself by others who will help support the league and sustain its vision.

How important is family support? The families of our players provide so much support in their decision to play in the first place, cheering them on at games, helping to provide the needs of the teams, and most importantly, keeping the rest of the family whole while we are playing a kids’ game.
