‘Mustangs Baseball Club Wins Inaugural 60+ Division Title at 2025 MSBL Holiday Classic’

When I started my play and managing in MSBL in 1988 in the 30+ division in Jacksonville, Florida, I could never have imagined that I or my teammates would still be playing in our 60s! Time flies when you are having fun, but in baseball it seems to go by at the speed of a Bob Gibson fastball! (You are probably close or in your 60s too, if you can remember watching him pitch).

Thankfully, Steve Sigler, Brian Sigler, Gary D’ambrisi, and Tom Prendergast keep creating older-age tournaments for us to play in. And, Vic Puglisi keeps making bigger size championship tee shirts for us to fit into.

This was the first year that the Holiday Classic in Sanford, Florida, hosted a 60+ division. In addition to the Mustangs, there were four other very competitive teams from Maine, Rhode Island, New York, and Florida.

The Mustangs had a 22-man roster, and it took every one of them to get us to the championship of this tournament. On the mound, Joe Feller pitched in five of the six games garnering a win and two saves. Kai Schjang, Mike Taylor, and Gary D’ambrisi each pitched in the round-robin.

Robert Calvert threw a hard-fought, semi-final game versus the LI Yankees. 60+ rookie pitcher, Wilson Reyes, won the championship game versus the always-strong Maine Diamond Dogs.

Juan Valdez, Mike McConnell, Scott Miner, Brian Cassidy, (tournament MVP), Joe Feller, Steve Hutchinson, Pedro Guzman, George Kerst, John Denney, Doug Megill, Rob DiRosario, Herb Cepeda, and Steve Fischer all posted OBPs over .300+ for the tournament. Tom Rosati, Nico Digioia, and Sean Cohan played almost every inning on defense. And, DH John Mauk, took on the duties of bench coach when he wasn’t at the plate.

Looking forward to the next time we all meet on the diamond!
