‘Mustangs Baseball Club Wins Third 50+ Title in Last Four Years’

The teams that decide to tackle not only the competition but also the weather elements at the Kickoff Classic each year really show their dedication to the game. With the winds howling at 50 mph, snow spitting off the mountain tops, and wind chills in the 30s, ten teams battled it out at the 50 division at the Las Vegas tournament.
After some low-scoring games and hard-fought battles, the Mustangs emerged again as champions. Wilson Reyes and Jeff ” Catfish” Hunter each pitched complete game wins on opening day. In the remaining round-robin game, Scott McIntosh and Andy Conde battled against the top-seeded, Calzona Sting, but we fell just short in a high-scoring game with lots of home runs aided by the out-blowing 50 mph winds.
Vince Towns pitched a 2-1 nail-biter in the quarterfinals versus Lehigh Valley in the bitter cold. Then Robert Calvert had to face and got a complete game win against the unbeaten Ventura Dodgers in the semi-finals.
Vince Towns pitched back-to-back days to win the championship over the unbeaten Calzona Sting. Vince was named our tournament MVP.
Rick Clough, led the team with a .800 OBP, while Joe Lowery, George Popkhadze, Ron Barckhoff, Mike Burton, Vince Towns, Spencer Headley, Omar Arellano, Robert Calvert, and Jerry Anderson all posted OBPs over .300+.
Jeff Newman, Jeremy Bourque, Rusty Anderson, and Scott Schlag played shutdown defense to secure our wins.
As always, the Mustangs wins are team wins. Every player contributes and keeps the team first above themselves. It is a pleasure to manage such a great group of men.
