Tri-Valley Gigantes 19, Paladin 3
‘Gigantes Repeat in 65+ Division’
Submitted by Ben Cabanas, Gigante’s manager
The Tri-Valley Gigantes became repeat champions by defeating Paladin, 19 – 3, in the 65+ Championship game at the MSBL Las Vegas Kickoff Classic.
It was a great team effort in all phases of the game: hitting, pitching, and defense. Starting pitcher Mike Allen allowed one run and Gary Stonebrook cruised the rest of the game in relief. Joe Polance played centerfield like a pro battling a brutal sun. The offense was led by Ray Quinteros who went 5-5, and Bill Baxter who added a 3-3 day. Dale Skinner’s first inning booming double started the scoring and was highlighted by a Dave Scola home run.
Highlights of team effort for the tournament include excellent handling of the pitching staff by catchers Rick Salmeri and Larry Rehberg. Pitching was led by starter Mike Allen who won the opener and championship game with Gary Stonebrook closing both games. Game two starter Ray Quinteros and game three starter Gary Huziar both pitched excellently in winning those two games.
The Gigantes hitting machine was led by Mark McNally and Bill Baxter hitting .875, Dale Skinner .700, Carl Speck .600, Larry Rehberg .571, Ray Quinteros .545, and Joe Polance .500.
