‘Hunter Tosses Complete Game Shutout Championship Victory’
Submitted by Dave Cross, Fedlock manager
The Southern Maryland Fedlock team captured its 12th Fall Classic Championship by defeating a top-seed Pittsburgh team 2-0 to win the 60-and-over National Division Championship. It was an extremely well-played game by both teams. Jeff ‘Catfish’ Hunter pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the team. Catfish scattered the three hits, allowing no runner to reach third base, and struck out five in pitching a complete game shutout. Even more remarkable, it was his third complete-game pitching effort in two days!
Chris Kelly led SO MD with two hits and scored the game-winning run on an RBI groundout by Rudy Carrico. Dub Daniels drove in Jeff Pate with the second run via an RBI groundout.
Defensively, the Fedlock effort was superlative as the team played its last two playoff games without an error. The infield efforts of Tom Walton, Dave Thune, Danny Lee, Fred Villegas, and Dub Daniels in the infield were great. Our catcher, Brian Kelley, was also OUTSTANDING! He also caught all 27 playoff innings, threw out every base runner that attempted to steal, and called a masterful game for Catfish!
Fedlock advanced to the championship game by defeating a veteran Puerto Rico team, 3-2, in a late-inning come-from-behind rally, highlighted by a pinch-hit RBI single by Don King and Hunter’s complete game pitching mastery.
Fedlock also got great pitching through the tourney from Jerry Michael, Dave Thune, and Kent Bowles. Catfish Hunter earned his MVP award with his pitching heroics in winning the team’s three playoff games. Dub Daniels, Rudy Carrico, and Jeff Pate were the team’s leading hitters
