Red Deer Legends 9, Mudville ‘9’ 1
‘Heintz Complete-game Masterpiece Secures Title in Final’
Submitted by Blair Hanna, Legends’ manager
The Red Deer Legends had 12 Canadians, seven U.S.-born players, with 12 players being over 67 years of age. It was a team effort all week, posting a 5-1 record, with the only loss being to the Mudville 9 by a score of 17-6. Legend players hit well all week, with Bye Braun leading the pack. Bye hit 3 for 4 with two doubles in the final.
Except for the one loss, Legend’s pitching was great all week. Ross Arnfinson led the way with a 7-inning performance in pool play. Having to win the final pool game to gain a bye in playoffs, Ernie Barten pitched nine innings for the win, while Ross pitched all nine innings in the semi-final. Hugh Heintz pitched nine innings in the 9-1 win over Mudville in the final.
Other notable hitters included Randy Greenwald, Hugh Heintz, Randy Cihlar, Rick Coker, and Lee Buelt. The Legend’s defense was great with outfielders Norm Campion and Craig Cory making several great plays.
