Bob Sherwin, LA Athletics manager
Athletics won the 60+ National Division championship of the MSBL Memorial Day tournament in San Diego. The Athletics went 4-0 in pool play and then
defeated the San Diego Heat 5-1 in the semi-finals. The championship game
saw the Athletics defeat the Sacramento Tribe 3-2 in a close game with Mike
Denevi throwing a complete game to get the win. Denevi was voted co MVP
along with Bob Quick, who was 11-15 in the tournament.
This was a
group that consisted of the some of the usual Athletics and lots of new
players. Some of my players were on other teams so it was gratifying to see how
well we gelled as a team. I think our pitching was key to our success. In
our four pool play games, all but one were complete games by our pitchers. The
other game saw starter Don Bixby go six innings to get the win.
In our semi-final, Jeff Gould from the LABL was spectacular in throwing a complete game and
striking out eight. Big Mike Denevi threw the championship and had the Tribe down 3-0 going into the final inning before surrendering two unearned runs.
This was also the first tournament I've personally been able to play in since
having a rare hamstring surgery last December. I am aware that only a handful
of doctors in LA even do it. I'm thankfully back to running full speed, whatever
that means for a 68 year old veteran. But it sure feels great!
