(In Art’s own words) Tony Esposito is 83 years ‘young’ and is an active member of the D’Backs in the 64-over division of the Chicago North MSBL. Tony signed with the St. Louis Browns in 1953
for the amazing sum of $7,500, which was a pretty fair amount back them. The family thought they were millionaires!
Tony graduated from St. Philips High
School in Chicago and continues to live in the area. He signed at the age of 19 and was assigned
to play in the class ‘C’ northern league for the Aberdeen Pheasants. His professional career kicked off with 92
games that year.
Tony played alongside Tito Francona,
father of current Cleveland manager Terry Francona, and his best buddy is
ex-major leaguer Randy Hundley. Unfortunately his pro career ended with knee problems that led to
Tony is a pitcher and shortstop and I
occasionally bat him lead-off. He
remains a remarkable player. I am 66
years old and it is hard to imagine still playing in 20 years. I admire Tony a great deal. He is special.
