'News from Around the MSBL Nation'...June 29, 2016

By Steve LaMontia, Director of Communications

Aaron Russell plays in the 19-over Adams division of the Puget Sound Senior Baseball League located in and around Seattle, Washington.  Aaron is a pitcher for the Cobras.  Below is a description of the game by his general manager Lance Jones.

"Aaron had a complete game win with 19 strikeouts in his first start of the year, working primarily in relief up until this point. The Cobras went up in the first inning and then did not score again in the game. Aaron did a fantastic job to hold the Pirates, only allowing them to score four runs in the third inning. Once past the third, Aaron found his momentum finishing with six shutout innings and a 6-4 victory over the Pirates.
"He was an absolute ace with two outs, closing out seven innings of the game with strikeouts. This was our teams first complete game of the year.  In 15 innings of work this year Aaron holds an amazing 0.60 ERA."
From the Tony Ferraro 52+ division Long Aisland Dodgers manager Marty Perry:

We played two games over the weekend and had two magnificent performances.  Bobby Daddario not only caught all 18 innings but went 7 for 10 with five RBI.  Bobby is currently hitting .348

Mike Gazzani played a super center field while going 6 for 9, including two doubles , a triple, a grand slam homer and 8 RBI and improved to .556 on the season.  Congratulations!

Clint Kuhl plays for the Brewers in over 30 league of the Delaware MSBL.  His younger brother Chad is tearing it up pitching in AAA in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.  Clint called his manager Ken Lagowski and said he wouldn't be at their game last Sunday because his brother just called him and said the Pirates had called him up to pitch against Kershaw and the Dodgers on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.  That's a Kuhl story!

(Editor's note: Kuhl did in fact outduel Kershaw Sunday night on his way to a 4-3 win, including four scoreless innings, and his first major league victory.)

Twin City MABL Player of the Week

The Warren (Ohio) Panthers extended their winning streak to seven games last Saturday in the Ohio MSBL Timeless Division, behind the offensive power of two of the team’s catchers. Tom Boyd (65 years old) went 3 for 5 with two doubles and a single, scored two runs and accumulated five RBI’s, while youngster Nick Dragash (58 years old) had a 4 for 5 afternoon with three singles and a double, scoring four times and driving home two runners.

For the season, Boyd is batting .517 and Dragash slightly better at .524. The Panthers who are the 2015 defending champions are now 7-0 at the mid-point of the 2016 season….

By Walt Sawchuck, Anderson's Senior Men's League White Sox manager
Greetings from Cincinnati and the Anderson Senior Men's League! I oversee the White Sox team and wanted to call attention to one of our studs Luke Holman.

Last Sunday, June 19th, in the semi-finals vs the Red Sox in our 13-10 win, Luke went 3 for 3 with back-to-back 3-run home runs! He has four home runs for the year now.  I've spent ten years in the league and it was the best offensive show I have seen...two no doubters.
Submitted by Bob Perrone and Mike LaComb, Mgrs., 55 Nationals, DCMSBL

A couple of  Sundays back, Ken Prohoniak, our forever young 58 year old pitcher on the 55 Nationals in the DCMSBL, set a new personal best strikeout record by pitching a two hit, 15 strikeout, complete game win versus a very good Mudhens team. Behind Ken's performance, the Nationals were able to score five unanswered runs after the Mudhens had scored an unearned run in the top of the first, as the Nationals hung on to win the game 5-1.
Ken started pitching when he attended Annandale High School, in Annandale, VA,  where he played baseball alongside his older brother. In high school he once fanned 14 batters. Then last week, forty years later, he broke his own personal record with the 15k outing! The best way to sum up his performance is.....kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk !!!
In 2014 Ken was a key player on the MSBL 50+ World Series Champion Diamond Dream Mustangs team. He reached that lofty accomplishment of finally winning a ring after competing in the national tournaments for 16 years!  For an encore after his 15k outing the following week, Ken pitched another complete game victory and only gave up one unearned run. Besides Ken's game  focus, he attributes a lot of his his pitching success to having great catchers and a solid defense behind him.
Thanks to MSBL, by providing a way for men to continue playing competitive baseball,  Ken was able to turn back time, and reach a new apex in his baseball career.

By Billy McDonald, Anderson Senior League White Sox

We had some ups and downs in the championship game on June 26th, some good plays and some bad. But we never gave up and won. Scott and Ryan getting on and keeping the pressure on the Reds Mike who we all like to see swing away put down a bunt to move the runner into scoring position. Chuck getting walked three times. Gary, Chris and Ray keeping us in the game with good solid pitching. The middle toward the bottom of the batting order getting us in the position that Walt gets a walk off single. There were so many positive things in that game that the list of game balls could have kept on growing. What can you say about our pitching staff, not just this year but through the years. Steve, Chris, Gary, Marty, Ray, Ray, Tim, Chuck and Paul. A staff of pitchers who every team in this league would love to have. (The game MVP's are shown below)

The picture below was submitted by Mike Gapanowicz, manager of the Racine River Bandits of the 28-over division in 'The Rock' league in Frankin, Wisconsin, near Milwaukee.  It was a special night not only for his River Bandits but a beautiful weather night.  Beautiful!  Thanks for sharing, Mike.
