MSBL/MABL Spotlight: July 20, 2016

By Steve LaMontia, Director of Communications

Gould and Wells Lead Bandits

The Westlake Bandits play in the Los Angeles Baseball League 35+ Continental Division.  They are currently in first place with a record of 12 wins, 0 losses and one tie.  The two primary pitchers are Jeff Gould(age 59) and Jeff Wells (age 63).  They have played on the Bandits for years and both have also traveled to Arizona to play in the annual MSBL World Series.  Here’s where it gets interesting.

The pitching time is usually split each game for both guys by manager Bob Sherwin.  Usually it's five innings for one and four for the other. So far this season Jeff Gould has accomplished the unthinkable, especially in a 35+ division.  He has thrown 32.1 innings without allowing a run, unearned or otherwise!  Says manager Sherwin, "I've been playing MSBL since 1991 and have never seen this occur.  Gould has allowed 22 hits and struck out 30 in those innings.”

This past Sunday his streak was in jeopardy as he allowed three straight singles to start the fourth inning.  He got the next batter to pop up and then the infield turned a double play to get out of the inning.

Wells is almost as impressive throwing 45.1 innings and striking out 28 along the way. He has a 1.99 ERA which is the next lowest in the division behind Gould.  It's no wonder they are undefeated!  Two aging pitchers dominating a 35+ division.

Chicago Elite Win Slugfest

The Chicago Elite sit atop the National South division of the Midwest Suburban League, located in and around Chicago, with an impressive 9-3 record. This past week they had an important match-up with the Wardogs and came away with a 13-10 slugfest victory to stay in first place.  Richie Bermudez was 3-4 with two runs scored, Justin CoConato was a perfect 3-3, was hit by a pitch and also scored a run, and Austin Kordik went 2-4 with a walk and two runs scored.  The Elite are led by veteran manager Henry Perez.  Below is a glimpse of their team stats:
