Knox College Alumni Magazine Honors Kansas City's Max Utsler

By Steve LaMontia, Director of Communications

Max Utsler is an original member of the Kansas City MSBL and also a veteran participant at the MSBL World Series in ArizonaKnox College in Galesburg, Illinois is Max’s alma mater and they recently completed a profile of Max titled ‘Max Utsler Goes Pro’ for publication in their alumni magazine.  Max was kind enough to share the article with us.  (click on the title to read the article)

Max has also been a major reporting contributor to the MSBL World Series newsletter throughout the years and penned a column in the newsletter entitled "Diary of an Aging Baseball Player."  He has also written stories for the World Series program, including a profile of MSBL Founder and President Steve Sigler, back in the days of Hardball Magazine.

Max is a 68 year old who continues to play in the 35-over and 45-over divisions of the KCMSBL.  He is a second baseman and third baseman and explained his deep MSBL World Series roots.   "I played in the first World Series in Phoenix and played the next 25 years except for one year,” said Max.  "I haven't been able to get off work to play the last three years, and it looks like another year of missing this year.”

The Kansas City MSBL began in 1988 and Max was right there in the thick of it.  "I was the 12th player to sign up to start the league in Kansas City.  Only three of us originals are left:  Bill Harmon, Scott Zavelo and myself.”

Tom Prendergast is the president of the Kansas City MSBL, as well as the MSBL World Series tournament director, and possesses a firsthand appreciation of Max’ contributions.  "Max Utsler was a big part of my MSBL World Series Daily News staff early on and was responsible for several innovations and articles that appeared each day,” said Tom.  "As a professor of journalism he was able to ensure that the WS Daily News looked like a real newspaper!”

Dr. Max Utsler’s journey from Knox College to official scorer for the Kansas City Royals to professor at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Kansas is well worth the read.  You can click on the recent Knox College article highlighted above to read all about how our MSBL friend Max has put quite a life together, both on and off the field.
