am attaching pictures (below) from the Shoeless Joe Baseball Tournament we organized
last October at the 'Field of Dreams' movie site in Dyersville, Iowa. In addition to my Chicago North
MSBL 1917 White Sox team we had Bill Harmon's Kansas City Cubs, Marty
Ribaudo's St. Louis Grays and Rick Tiek's Midwest Pirates. Each team
played one night game on the Field of Dreams Movie Site and two day
games. We all even walked in and out of the corn!
On Saturday we also
ran a skills clinic for local youth on behalf of the 'Field'. Millions of dollars have been raised for the kids programs and the efforts include current and former major league players, including Wade Boggs.
It was a great tournament and everyone enjoyed playing on this magical field. Former major league pitcher and teammate Fred Holdsworth worked on
various pitching skills with the kids. Fred is a great guy and, as you
can imagine, an excellent player. The skills session ended with each of
the kids being able to "bat against a major-leaguer." Fred lobbed them
in and the rest of the team flopped all over the field trying to field
the ball - only to make bad throws and catches so the kids could round
me, the tournament was fantastic. Players on each team just loved
being there and playing baseball. While we all wanted to win, just
playing there against others who love the game as much as we do was
reward enough. I have never been to or played in a tournament where
there was more camaraderie between the teams with fun banter back and forth
and just having a great time. There is something about that corn!
