Submitted by Jim Gustafson, Mustangs manager

On Sunday, September 27th, 2020 the Colorado Springs Mustangs took on the returning MSBL Champion Grizzlies in the Classics Division Championship game in Colorado Springs, CO. The Mustangs prevailed over their arch-rival Grizzlies 26-5 in nine innings.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead to the undefeated Grizzlies in the top of the first, added on four more in the second and 10 in the third thanks to key hits, sound base running, three home runs, and uncharacteristic errors by the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies have always been a class act in our league and we are blessed to achieve a victory from them.

The Mustangs scored 26 runs in the contest and with the early lead they never looked back. Major contributors to the victory were Neil Chapman going 5-7 with four doubles and four RBIs; Mark Lehman went 4-5 with two walks and four runs; Joe Carns went 5-6 with a walk; Jack Bookout went 5-7 with a home run; Andy Smith had two home runs and five RBI’s, and Scott Johnson went 3-6 with a home run. Scott Johnson threw a complete game for the Mustangs, throwing 159 pitches, giving up six runs, five earned on 12 hits, walking six while striking out eight.  Scott was awarded the game MVP for his accomplishments at the plate and on the mound.

Finally, the Mustangs want to say Thank You to our league president Bud Maison for getting us all on the field for some much-needed stress relief from COVID.  What a year!!
