2020 Diamond Dream Mustangs Claim First 50+ Title in DCMSBL

DCMSBL, 50+ Division

Diamond Dream Mustangs 15, Potomac River Bandits 5

‘Dunn and Cassidy Lead the Way on the Bump and at the Plate’

Submitted by Mike LaComb, Mustangs manager

The Mustangs jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning over their perennial DC league rival, the Potomac River Bandits, and from there, they never looked back. Chris Dunn pitched a complete game, winning 15-5 when the dust settled.

On the offensive side, Dan Cassidy led the way with three hits while Chris Dunn, Mike McConnell, Mike LaComb and Dave Kaufmann, chipped in with two hits each. The team was able to get all 17 players to the plate.

The starting defense was anchored by veteran catcher Joe Walsh, with Greg Sadosuk at third base, Dan Cassidy at short, Mike McConell at second, Ken Prohoniak at first, Sean Cohan in center, Dave Kaufmann in left and Alex Krupenchenkov in right. Other players contributing with innings in the field and at bats were Scott Miner, Mark Gleason, Bill Dornbusch, Barry Bumgarner, Doug Megill, Kevin Cecil and Rick Beizer, our 78 years young, “Dean of the Team“.

Other contributing players that had to miss the championship due to other commitments, but had been there all season long to help us win the title, were Steve Munday, Danny Craig, Robert Smith, Ray Moon, Wilson Reyes, Ron Barckhoff and John Phillips.

This was a crazy hectic baseball season with Covid-19 causing a late start and all kinds or regulations in order for us to be allowed to play.  But we managed to get through it without anyone getting sick, and for the most part, other than the usual aches and pains, no serious player injuries. This was the Mustangs first championship at the 50-over age level, and we hope the beginning of many more to come.

Most of all, we are grateful for the efforts of our league commissioner Jerry Klemm and league president Larry Lombardi for making the 2020 DCMSBL season happen while we are in the middle of a pandemic.
