‘Bombers Walk-off for First Holiday Classic Title’

Submitted by Damian Fedele, Bombers manager

We jumped out to an early four run lead with two runs in the second and third innings. Our starter and tournament MVP, Matt Campbell, went two innings after throwing seven innings the night before in our semifinal win against the EC Cardinals. Matt ended up throwing 11 innings over the weekend with 17 strikeouts and zero runs allowed and two wins.

After the third inning our bats went silent as the Nationals pitcher kept us off balance and allowed them to tie the game 4-4 in the eighth.  The game went into extras.

In the bottom half of the 10th we got our leadoff batter, Jack Fameree, on with walk. He then took second on a passed ball and Matt Campbell laid down a perfect bunt to get him over to third while Matt beat it out for a hit.  With men at second and third, EJ hit a deep fly ball to center to drive in the winning run! Nathan Pittman did an amazing job in relief, throwing eight innings to get the win.  Our hats are off to the Nationals, as they are a very good team and played a great game!

We had timely hitting from every one, along with great pitching and defense. It was a total team effort and an awesome finish to a great weekend of baseball.  We have been playing in the Holiday Classic since 2014 with two runners-up finishes so it was nice to finally win one!
